DALAGUETE, CEBU — The rhythmic, haunting melodies of the Pasyon filled the air across Dalaguete today, April 3, as the municipality observed Good Friday with its deep-seated religious traditions.
From the historic San Guillermo de Aquitania Parish to small pasyonan (chanting stations) in the mountain barangays, locals gathered for the marathon chanting of the life and death of Jesus Christ. This practice, a centerpiece of Dalaguetnon Holy Week, serves as both a solemn penance for the elderly and a cultural rite of passage for the youth.
A Tradition of Devotion
The Pasyon in Dalaguete is distinct for its community involvement. Unlike more modern observances, many families here still maintain the “pabasa” in their homes, inviting neighbors to join in the 24-hour ritual.
“It is more than just singing,” says one local devotee. “It is our way of walking with Christ through His suffering, a tradition passed down from our great-grandparents that we refuse to let fade.”
Beyond the Chants
While the chanting continues, other Lenten activities across the town highlight Dalaguete’s unique blend of faith and geography:
- Cristo Rey Mountain Park: Pilgrims trekked to Barangay Mantalongon to pray the Stations of the Cross amidst life-sized statues.
- Solemn Processions: The town center prepared for the Santo Entierro (interment of Christ) procession, featuring centuries-old religious icons.
As the sun sets on Good Friday, the “Pasyon sa Dalaguete” stands as a powerful reminder of Cebuano resilience and unwavering faith, bridging the gap between ancient heritage and the modern world.
